I divided the house up into five areas and each day we tackled one area. At 8yo, J is fully capable of all sorts of helpfulness. He did not complain about the tasks (good boy!), but did mention that he was eager to get back to using his brains again. Approximately once a day. Usually as I handed him a duster or other tool.
First things first: Get the dirt out of the rugs! Check out the muscle . . . the technique . . .

Look, he gets to sit down for this job! White kitchen cabinets always need a good scrubbing:

Such exhausting work. I guess it's time for a break:

The next day. I'm not exactly sure what this face is about. There was no odor, I promise!

you know I must comment on the vacuuming. Uncle B would be very proud of him. And as a wife of someone who loves to vacuum, I can attest that yes, his wife will LOVE the fact that he can vacuum!! Oh, and I also love the rug technique, when can he come to Aunt T's house???
HappyMom--I'll pass along the rug-cleaning request to J. He'll pencil you in on his schedule.
Ask Uncle B if J's vacuuming skills look like they need tweaking, please. He is, after all, a professional.
Lexi--Agreed! That boy prefers reading to just about anything...
Bless you! And, bless J for not complaining. Please pass on to J that my kids had to do chores, too, and moms really appreciate the help. (C always had to wash down the white cupboards.)
Packrat--J loves it when he hears what other kids get to/have to do. Being an only child he isn't quite convinced that others are required to do what he is!
The cupboards are closer to the floor, the kids are shorter than we are . . . it's just a perfect combination!
