Second Grade Health: My Version

I've mentioned before how much I'm learning . . . I mean, how much J is learning through homeschooling. According to many Scope and Sequences, second grade science should cover the basics of the human body and astronomy.

J began being interested in the human body innards around two years ago. He has since learned about the bones and many of the systems. (We're saving some for *later* if you know what I mean.) Since he was so interested, he managed to memorize all sorts of body part names and their whereabouts. Tomorrow I'll take some pictures of the results of that pursuit.

Knowing that we'd essentially covered enough information about the human body for now, I decided to incorporate taking CARE of that body. That is a subject that I spend a lot of time thinking about and educating myself about. I decided that I wanted to learn more and that J might as well learn with me. Or me with him. Either way.

To that end I dedicated three of our school months to this area. The first month we studied nutrition. About two years ago God directed me to seek out information regarding healthy eating with the understanding that it should agree with the fact that He made things a certain way for a purpose. I ended up finding this book:

Nourishing Traditions is a wealth of amazing information (and recipes) that lined up with the criteria that nutrition should start with food in its "purist" form--how God made it. We covered Protein, Carbohydrates, Fats, Dairy, Vitamins, Minerals, and Beverages. Not your usual lineup of nutrition terms, eh? I'm going to be doing a few posts specifically explaining those. J will illustrate.

This month we've gone even further "out there." Homeopathy. I'll be doing a post on that as well. This book is our "text."

Next month we will concentrate on herbs. There's a FANTASTIC website called "Learning Herbs" that has a free course as well as tons of information on all sorts of things related to herbs. J and I will take the online course and will also use this board game:
I bought the game a few months ago and we've played it a few times already. To supplement the course and game, I'll use the following book as a sort of reference guide. The herbs are set up in alphabetical order, so we'll probably peruse a few just for fun.

J has enjoyed what we've covered so far. So have I.
