Planet Humor

It would take quite a long time to post ALL the drawings that come from J's fingers. We are constantly going through them and reducing, just to keep them from taking over the house. But, I thought these were post-worthy. They made me laugh, anyway!

In the first drawing, the planets are waiting in line (for the sun to light up the universe). In front of them there is (apparently) a sign that says, "No Books of Any Sort in this Line." Jupiter is completely disregarding that sign by reading a comic book. (About Superman, of course.) Uranus (to his right), is a little disgusted at this display of disobedience.

In front of Jupiter are Pluto (looking at his watch), Venus (who has noticed Jupiter's bad manners, too), and Mercury (who is just bored).

Next up we have Uranus playing tennis (wearing a visor), and Saturn who is playing on the monkey bars. Uh oh. The tennis ball got away from Uranus and hit poor Saturn right in the eye. Trouble!

In this drawing, the planets are doing a little forest clearing. Jupiter (with safety goggles in place), was getting ready to chop the felled tree with his ax when he tripped over a log. On the right, Uranus, who saw Jupiter, was concerned. Then he heard something. Another tree was heading right toward him! He turned quickly in horror. Unfortunately, the artist left us in the lurch as to what happened. (J says Uranus moved away quickly.)

Who needs Charlie Brown or Blondie when you could be reading about planets?

The Planets and Their Roman Names

In history we have (finally) moved past Egypt to Rome. Immediately J recognized the names of the planets being those of Roman gods. All except Earth and Uranus, that is.

Immediately a sketch was made to indicate how the names fit with the planets. From the top left, we have the winged hat and shoes of Mercury, the messenger god. To his left is Venus, the goddess of love. She apparently likes what she sees.

Below them on the left is Jupiter, the king of the gods. One of Jupiter's moons is Io, who, as the story goes, was once a woman but was changed into a cow. See her horns and the four legs? She isn't a planet. That was just a freebie.

To the king's left is Mars, the god of war. He has his sword. He has his shield. He has his helmet. Judging from his expression of lowered eyebrows and shouting mouth, he's ready for battle.

Beneath Mars is Saturn. He's Jupiter's father and the god of time. Since his son is the king, he's retired and has picked up a hobby that matches his purpose. He has "developed" his photography skills so that he can always show the past. He likes going back in time. The top photo is Pluto, god of the underworld, sitting on his throne. The bottom pic is of Neptune, the god of the sea. He's treading water.

You'll always remember the origins of the planets names now, won't you? We're glad to be of service.
