We are really enjoying Discovering Great Artists by MaryAnn F. Kohl. I haven't blogged about every activity we've done, but I have a bone to pick about the Rubens one.
First we did El Greco. In his paintings he elongated the subjects, exaggerating their necks, arms, torsos, and legs. Below is J's version (the original is at the right). It was interesting, certainly. I had no problems with this one. It was kind of creepy, but it IS, after all, Art:
For Rubens, the book recommended using chalk on brown paper. The idea was to start with white chalk to lightly define the features, and then use the black chalk to indicate shadows. Not an easy assignment, but it looked fun.
I showed J a charcoal sketch of my husband that someone did in 1974. We talked about features and shading. Then I did a quick attempt at drawing J myself. As you can tell, I am NOT an artist. J has no problem shooting for my level of ability. Many times he surpasses it.
But. Not. This. Time.
Evidently my hair is wild and I have a five-o'clock shadow that would rival Rocky's. I have even grown a widow's peak. At least I have no need for collagen in my lips.
I need to get to the beauty parlor...NOW.
