J was lining up his crew and he and they were fighting the Spanish bears. I heard him narrating the battle during which he threw in the piece of information that pirates used grappling hooks to snag the rigging and sails of their prey and literally drag the ship to them. I'm not going to make a grappling hook.
One activity was to copy some of the famous pirate flags. We found out that many created their own design. Sort of a gruesome calling card. J abbreviated the names of the pirates. He's a firm believer in abbreviation. The most famous pirate of the group of flags he chose was Black Bart (Bartholomew Roberts), fifth from the left.
We did make a cutlass and dagger. J also drew a picture of the boatswain (pronounced "bo-zun") showing some of his tools of the trade. The tar ended up in a cardboard box. Hey, if a pirate SHIP can be a cardboard box, why can't the tar be stored in one as well? The other paper shows the results of the drawing lesson on a galleon. The sea monsters were his addition.
