Faces

Rembrandt was known for the use of expressions. He often looked at his own reflection and drew what he saw.

So our next assignment was for J to do the same. He sat in front of the mirror and watched his face. He had a hard time getting the "regular face" he said. It's hard when you're laughing.

It's all about the discipline.

Here J is creating an angry face.

The scared face was properly executed.

And now, the results of this artistic exercise:

Guess what his next request was? Yes, he wanted to do more. A boy and a mirror with free reign to make faces. Does it get any better than that?

I gave him a scrap piece of paper. He felt too restricted by having to draw a face outline each time (he likes freedom in his art), so he concentrated on the emotion.

I'm sure Rembrandt would have approved.
